Please Pleat Me

A little while ago I posted about an exhibition of napkin folding. I was quite astonished at the amount of work put into these creations intended for special occasions. These amuses tables did make me look at things more closely, though. When lately in Cordoba, in the huge Catholic church that is built into the centre of the mesquita there, I saw this monument to a bishop and instantly recognized those pleats! Just who was responsible for the meticulous ironing of his surplice? It really does mark the costume out as being high maintenance and so high class - as much perhaps as lace would. This monument dates from around 1705.
