Beauties at Lacy Scott and Knight Auction * 11 June 2011

I was very much taken by Lot 282 - this George III needlework picture and verse sampler signed Frances Alice her work in the tenth year of her age 1792. I love the house and family group worked in the lower half, in contrast to the two biblical images of the Temptation and the Flight into Egypt worked in the upper half. And what about that magnificent vase of colourful flowers flanked by two birds? This is gorgeous and special. Measuring 42cm square (with repairs and restoration), it is housed in a later glazed frame and has an estimate of £500 - £800

Also special is this mid 17th century ladies embroidered nightcap, having all-over silk worked leaf and flower decoration and applied metal lace. It comes with a stand  and ebonised glazed display case. Its estimate is £1500 - £2500 and it is lot 285.

Lot 283 - an early embroidered silkwork study of around 1700 also caught my fancy. Depicting a couple with musician within a landscape, it measures 22cm x 32cm and has an estimate of £500 - £700.

The Salisbury School is very interesting and we are seeing more works of this provenance, marked by rather beautiful floral borders. This one, lot 281, was worked by Jane Gaffs in 1858. It is discoloured and has some minor losses. Measuring 40cm x 31cm the estimate is just £100 - £150.

Finally, there is lot 284, a 17th century needlework band signed EL. It measures 33cm x 20.5cm and has an estimate of £600 - £800

Do register early so you can bid. To see more you will need to see Samplers and Embroideries.
